Across The Abyss of Time: Our Iconic Journey to Giza

A Bucket List “Roots & Heritage” Homecoming

Don't judge a pyramid by it’s cover; they are more than just stones.

Rooted in grit, spiritual significance and historical power: The Pyramids of Giza are truly a sight to see and I will forever be grateful that I got to experience it with my Peace Corps Fiji crew. A closing of service group trip of a lifetime that will forever be dear to my heart.  What a way to bring in the New Year in 2019. Humbly speaking, no other new year memory has topped this adventure and classifying this as my first world wonder adventure is beyond cloud 9!

It gets no realer than coasting through the Sahara Desert, west of the Nile River on a camel with your tribe. It wasn’t until that very moment that I learned there were 9 pyramids, not just 1!! All are built intricately in various shapes and sizes. An important distinction that Global History failed to teach me. I am a firm believer that travel is by far the best educator. And through travel, I have been blessed and fortunate to learn about so many countries (worldwide) at the pure grassroots level.

“Happiness is conditional; curate memories that fill your cup unapologetically”

Looking back at this photo and appreciating how radiant I looked and felt in that moment exudes pure B L A C K  J O Y. Being present and grounded (literally and figuratively) in a historical landmark brought me that much closer to my ancestral roots, knowing how much they sacrificed and endured to build a noble masterpiece. Authentically speaking, I don’t take this moment for granted. Google images don’t do the visuals justice; experiencing this world wonder via the naked human eye shouldn’t be taken lightly. For me, it represented a still moment of spiritual reflection and eternal gratitude. As people of color travelling abroad, we need to normalize more experiences like this. We are worthy and deserving of a life that adds to the benefit of cultural curiosity.

Check out this photo collage and recap video as we trot our way through the country, embracing the local and inner tourists within :)

Blog Tips for Visiting Egypt

Plan Around the Weather

Egypt can be extremely hot, especially in Upper Egypt (Luxor & Aswan).

  • Best time to visit: October–April

  • Summers (June–August) can exceed 100°F

  • Mornings are best for sightseeing (especially pyramids & temples)

Visit the Pyramids Early

The Pyramids of Giza get crowded quickly.

  • Arrive right when they open

    • Winter (October – March):8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

    • Summer (April – September):7:00 AM – 7:00 PM

    • Last entry: usually about 1 hour before closing

  • Bring small bills for tips

  • Consider hiring a licensed guide to understand the authentic history

  • Don’t miss the Great Sphinx of Giza (its nearby as a duo-combo)

Build in Time for Cairo

Many travelers rush through Cairo, but it deserves time.

  • Visit the Egyptian Museum (or the newer Grand Egyptian Museum if open)

  • Explore Islamic Cairo & Khan el-Khalili bazaar

  • Try local dishes like koshari and ful medames

Cairo is chaotic, with heavy traffic, but that’s part of its charm as a vibrant city.

Take a Nile Cruise

A cruise between Luxor and Aswan is one of the most relaxing ways to see temples.

Highlights include:

  • Valley of the Kings

  • Karnak Temple

  • Philae Temple

It’s hot but absolutely worth it!

Dress Modestly (Especially Outside Resorts)

While tourist areas are relaxed, modest clothing shows respect in Middle Eastern culture:

  • Shoulders and knees covered (especially in mosques)

  • Lightweight, breathable fabrics

  • A scarf is useful for mosque visits and sun protection

Negotiate at Markets

In bazaars like Khan el-Khalili:

  • Bargaining is expected

  • Start at about 50% of the initial price

  • Smile and keep it friendly

If you’re not interested, a polite but firm “La, shukran” is standard and respectful to local natives.

Don’t Skip the Red Sea

If time allows, relax in these beach cities and indulge in various excursions:

  • Hurghada

  • Sharm El Sheikh

The Red Sea offers world-class snorkeling and diving. Divine oceanic views you don’t want to miss!

✈️ Bonus Tip: Travel Insurance & Visa

  • Most visitors can get a visa on arrival (check your country’s policy) and apply ahead of time if necessary

  • Travel insurance is highly recommended

    • Reputable companies I suggest are:

      • Faye Travel Insurance

      • Allianz Global Assistance
